Sharad Joshi was an eminent poet in the Hindi language. Apart from that, he was known as sharp satirist as well as author. He also wrote dialogues and scripts for Bollywood movies as well as television.

Sharad Joshi’s Biography

Sharad Joshi was born the second child of six, to Sriniwas and Santi Joshi in Ujjain. Sharad was precocious and started writing at a young age. He began his career writing for newspapers and radio in Indore in the 50s. He went on to compose satire in different media including poems, novels, filmography for movies as well as TV series. His satire is noted for its honesty and attempt not to play to an audience. He was also noted for his accurate portrayal of Bharat, the forgotten side of India.

Sharad Joshi’s Literature work

  • In prose, Joshi often focussed on social and economic justice issues.
  • Atha Shri Ganeshaya Namah, Billiyon ka Artha Shastra, Buddhijivi, Sahitya ka Mahabali were some of his better known satirical essays.
  • Andhon Ka Haathi was his most well known play where he displayed his trademark humour.

Sharad Joshi’s movie work

  • He composed dialogue for such films as Kshitij, Chhoti si Baat, Utsav and Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahn.

The 2009 hot TV show Lapataganj was based on an eponymous novel by Joshi.

  • He also wrote for dialogues for some of the most successful TV serials of his time. This included Vikram aur Betaal, Ye Jo Hai Zindagi and Ye Duniya Gazab Ki.

Sharad Joshi’s Awards and Contributions

  • The satirist was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990 for his contributions to Hindi literature. Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian honor.

The MP government gives out the Sharad Joshi Samman in his memory every year since 2009. The award is given to outstanding writers, and has a cash prize of INR 51,000 and a citation.

  • His daughter Neha  Sharad is an actress and poet. She organized Sharadotsav, a literary and theathre festival in 2016 to commemorate her father.
