Biography of Classical Musician Amjad Ali Khan:

Amjad Ali Khan was born on 9 October 1945 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Amjad father’s name is Hafiz Ali Khan and mother’s name is Rahat Jahan. Amjad family belongs to Bangash lineage. Khan’s father was a famous musician at Gwalior court. Hafiz received training from the descendants of Tansen.  Hafiz Ali Khan died in 1972. Amjad got married twice. In 1976 Amjad got married to Subhalakshmi Barooah, a Bharatanatyam dancer from Assam. Their sons, Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan are also trained musicians.

Career of Indian Musician Amjad Ali Khan:

Amjad gave his first performance when he was of six years old. In 1963 Amjad Ali Khan performed first in the United States. Amjad has worked with various Indian artists and also has collaborated with many foreign bands as well. He has worked as a visiting professor at the University of New Mexico.

Achievements of Amjad Ali Khan:

  • Amjad Ali Khan is an Indian Classical Musician who plays Sarod born in Gwalior.  Amjad Ali Khan was born into a musical family, and he is the sixth generation of musicians in the family.
  • He received Padmashri in 1975, Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001 for his contributions to arts. He is also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989.
  • He is married to Subhalakshmi Barooah, a classical dancer and father of two sons.
  • World of Amjad Ali Khan and ‘Abba – God’s greatest gift to us,’ are the two famous books on Amjad Ali Khan.
