Brief History of The Fourth Mughal Emperor – Jahangir Jahangir was born on 30 August 1569 in Fatehpur Sikri. Jahangir’s mother was the daughter of Raja Bharmal, Jodhabai. Jahangir’s father was Abu’l-Fath Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. Jahangir was the fourth Mughal Emperor of Mughal Dynasty. The name Jahangir in Persian means ‘conqueror of the world’. Jahangir’s real name was Salim who was named after Sheikh Salim Chisti. Salim sat on the throne with the title of Nuruddin Mohammed Jahangir Badshah Ghazi on October 24, 1605 AD. Jahangir was the King from 1605 until his death in 1627.

History of Jahangir and his reign

  • Jahangir’s son Khusro rebelled immediately after sitting on the throne of Jahangir.
  • Jahangir sentenced fifth Sikh Guru Arjun Dev by hanging him for protecting his son Khusro.
  • Jahangir married Meherunisa, a widow in May 1611, and gave her the title of Noormahal and Nur Jahan.
Jahangir gave the title of Itmad-Ud-Daula to the father of Noorjahan, Gyasbeg.
  • Nur Jahan’s mother, Asmat Begum, discovered the method of extracting perfume with rose.
  • Jahangir constructed golden chain in the pillar situated on the Shah Burj and Yamuna coast of Agra Fort, which anyone could play to get the justice.
  • This gold chain was famous as the chain of justice.
  • Like Akbar, Jahangir’s rule was also characterized by religious tolerance.
  • Jahangir’s reign is called the golden period of painting.
  • Noorjahan built the tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daula which is made of white marble.
During the time of Jahangir, Captain Hawkins, Sir Thomas Row, William Fitch and European travelers came to India.
  • Jahangir composed his autobiography Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri in Persian language.
  • Jahangir has fallen ill and went to Kashmir and Kabul to restore his health.
  • Jahangir decided to return Lahore from Kashmir due to the winter season in Kashmir.
  • Jahangir died on his way to Lahore from Kashmir.
  • Jahangir died on 7 November 1627 AD. Jahangir was buried in Shahdara (Lahore).
