What is Supermoon and Blue Moon

A supermoon is a somewhat rare lunar event. It is when a new moon or full moon is at the closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This closest approach is called the perigee of the orbit. Because it is closer to the Earth, it appears somewhat bigger in size in the sky. Compared to its diameter at the furthest distance, supermoons have a diameter that is 14% more. A blue moon is defined in two ways. It might be the third or fourth full moon that appears in one season. Else, it might be a second full moon in a month. These events are fairly common. The term has nothing to do with the color of the moon.

Definition of Super Blue Blood Moon

Super blue blood moons are an extremely rare event. Super blue blood moon is a combination of three fairly rare lunar events – supermoon, blue moon and total lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses occur when the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon surface. This occurs when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon. These are just the full moon.
The blood moon refers to the fact that the moon has a reddish tint when it is totally eclipsed.
  • The lunar orbit is tilted at an angle to the solar orbit, lunar eclipses do not happen every full moon.
  • It happens because of lights refracted off of Earth’s atmosphere reflecting off the Moon. It is red for the same reason sunsets and sunrises are red.
The next  Super Blue Blood moon event will occur only on December 31, 2028, and later on January 31, 2037.
  • The last time such an event happened in Europe was in 1982. The United States shores have not seen such an event in as many as 152 years.
