Madhuri Dixit’s Biography

Madhuri Dixit is one of the most recognizable actresses of the 90s. She was born in Mumbai and studied microbiology. From a young age, she was also an accomplished Kathak dancer. Her initial work in Bollywood was not a success. Her debut movie was Abodh in 1984, which was produced by Rajashri Productions. She had a string of flops at the box office but she was noticed by critics as a good actress.

Her breakthrough movie was Tezaab starring with Anil Kapoor in 1988. She went on to act in as many as seven movies with the veteran Bollywood actor. Tezaab was the most successful film of 1988. Her other commercial and critical hits henceforth were Ram Lakhan, Prem Pratigyaa, Tridev, and Parindaa.

Dixit left India for a brief period of time in the early 2000s. She made a comeback in Bollywood with the movie Aaja Nachle.

Madhri Dixit’s Career and Achievements

  • In 1990, Dixit broke from her usual roles in the film Dil paired opposite Aamir Khan. The film was a box office hit and she won her first Filmfare award for her role.
  • Madhuri Dixit is also known as “Dhak Dhak Girl”.

  • Her second Filmfare for acting was for the 1992 movie Beta, opposite Anil Kapoor. For her feminist role, Dixit was also showered with critical acclaim.
  • The 1994 movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was the biggest Bollywood hit. The movie earned a mind-boggling INR 1.35 billion, and broke Sholay’s records.
  • Dixit also bagged her third Filmfare for her role in the movie.
  • Madhuri Dixit played the role of Chandramukhi in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s rendition of Devdas in 2002. The film was a raging international hit and was screened at the Cannes festival. It was also named in the top 10 films of the millennium by Time magazine.

Madhuri is the only female actor to be nominated for Filmfare awards 14 times. 

  • After Devdas movie, Dixit moved to Denver with her family.

Madhuri Dixit’s Awards and Recognition

  • Dixit has won four Filmfare for Best Actress, one for Best Supporting Actress.
  • She also won the Filmfare Special Award for completing 25 years in cinema.
