History of Vijayanagara Empire – Harihara and Bukka The VijayNagara Empire was established in 1336 AD by two brothers, Harihar and Bukka. Harihara and Bukka were first the Aristocrat of Kaktiy ruler, Pratap Rudradev.

  • Harihar and Bukka established the Vijayanagar empire with the inspiration of Saint Vidyaranya and his brother Sayan.
  • VijayNagara empire is called the first Hindu Empire of the Middle Ages.
  • Hampi was the capital of VijayNagara kingdom.
  • The official language of the VijayNagara Kingdom was Telugu.
Vijayanagar empire was ruled by four dynasties -Sangamvansh, Saluvavansh, Tuluwvansh, Arviduvansh.

History of Sangam dynasty

The name of Sangam dynasty lies in the name of ‘Sangam’, father of Harihar and Bukka’, the founder of the Vijayanagar empire. Bukka First sent an envoy to China in 1374 AD.
Bukka First holds the title of ‘Vedmarg Pratishthpak’.
The famous scholar ‘Sayan’ was the Chief Minister of Harihar Second. Harihar Second holds the title of ‘Maharajadhiraj’.

History of Devaraya First

  • Devaraya First, constructed dam and canals on the Tungabhadra river.
  • It was during his reign that Italian traveler Nicolo Conti came to Vijaynagar.

History of Devaraya Second

The most glorious king of Sangam dynasty was Devaraya Second. He is also called ‘Immadidevraya’. He holds the title of ‘Gajabetkar’ (hunter of elephants).
  • During the reign of Devaray Second, the ambassador of Persia, ‘Abdurrazaq’ visited Vijayanagara.
  • Devaraya Second himself was a great writer and patron of poets.
Devaraya Second is also known as  ‘Immadidevraya’
  • Devrai Second wrote a commentary on the Mahanakata Sudhadidhi and Brahmasutra of Badarayan.
  • Famous Telugu poet Shrinivas lived in the court of Devaraya second for a few days.
  • Mallikarjuna was known as ‘Praudhdevaraya’.

  • Narasimha Saluva founded the ‘Salu Dynasty’.
