Regional Rural bank Regional Rural Bank was established on October 2, 1975, with five regional rural banks. The main objective of establishing Regional Rural Bank is to provide financial services to small and marginal farmers. By March 31, 2016, the number of total regional rural banks was 56. In regional rural banks, ownership is proportionately between the Government of India, the concerned State Government and the promoter bank is 50%, 15%, and 35%, respectively. As per the recommendations of the “Kelkar Committee” by the Government of India, no new regional rural bank has been opened since April 1987.
