Shung Dynasty | Post Maurya Period

Shung Dynasty – Post Maurya Period Pushyamitra Shung killed “Brihadratha” the last king of Maurya dynasty in 185 BC and laid the foundation of Shung Dynasty. Pushyamitra Shung defeated Yavana. He announced Vaidik Dharm as the royal religion. He accepted Sanskrit his national language inspite of Pali.

The Sunga Empire  is a Magadha  dynasty that controlled North-central and Eastern India 
He completed “Ashvamedha Yagna” two times during his reign out of which the chief priest for one was “Patanjali”. The last king for Shung Dynasty was “Devbhuti”.

History of Kanva Dynasty 

Vasudeva Kanva killed the last Shunga king Devabhuti in the year 73 AD, and established the Kanva Dynasty on Magadha. The last ruler of this dynasty was King Sushma. Click here to read about Maurya Dynasty
The Sunga dynasty was established in 185 B.C.E., about 50 years after Ashoka’s death.
The arrival of regicide started with Pushyamitra Shunga in Indian history and Vasudeva Kanva continued that by killing his king Devabhuti Shunga, the last Shunga ruler. Vasudeva Kanva was the descendent of Kanvayana Brahmin family.]]>
