Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati passes away

Head to: Kanchi Kamkothi math Died on: March 1, 2018 Jayendra Saraswati, the 69th head of the Kanchi Kamkothi, died in a private facility in Kanchipuram. His death was marked by expressions of condolence from all major political parties in India. The spiritual leader was noted for his socio-religious leanings, especially for his outreach to Dalits and Muslims around the country. The pontiff is to be succeeded by Vijayendra Saraswati, who was chosen by Senior Pontiff Maha Periyavaa during the 1980s.

The guru also found himself at the center of controversy when he was named as accused in the conspiracy to murder Sankararaman, manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple, Kanchipuram, on November 11, 2004. However, he was acquitted.

Biography of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati:

Jayendra Saraswati, born Subramanyam Mahadeva, was anointed a successor to Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi in 1954, who also gave him the title of Jayendra Saraswati. Jayendra succeeded Chandrasekharendra as the head of the Kanchi mutt in 1994. Jayendra Saraswati was known for his unusual style of spiritual leadership. He was mentored as a young boy by Maha Periyavaa with whom he traveled the country.
He was noted for his attempts at mediating a solution to the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi issue during the reign of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His participation in public life was also remarkable for attempts to admit Dalits into places of worship from which they had been barred.

The reason why Kanchi Shankaracharya had been jailed? 

The pontiff was in November 2011 as the primary accused in the conspiracy to murder the manager of A. Sankararaman, manager of the Sri Varadharajaswamy temple at Kancheepuram. Sankararaman had been threatening to take legal action to stop the Shankaracharya’s visit to China, In the knife attack on the victim, he was killed and his wife and one other person were injured.

  2. Vijayendra Saraswati will be the only Kanchi mutt head not to be appointed by the current head of the mutt.
  3. Jayendra Saraswati was chosen to succeed Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi when he was only 19.
